Links Library

Here's the full index of Folk Music links, organized by category. There's some redundancy here - some items appear in more than one category for ease of use. Also, many of these pages have not been updated in over a year - please report dead/changed links. Thanks.

Americana/Alternative Country
This burgeoning category of folk music combines a contemporary pop-rock sensibility with genuine country roots. Taking Texas rather than Nashville as the center of their scene, these are some of the best songwriters working today.

Artist Home Pages
ABCD EFGH IJKL MNOPQ RSTUVWXYZ

Fine folk and acoustic artists and their fine webpages. Emphasis on uncommon songcraft and musicianship, irrespective of genre.

Bluegrass, Old Time & Swing
Bluegrass fever is sweeping the U.S. - and the world. Old Timey music includes traditional American folk music, mainly from the South and Southeast, often with Celtic inflections. The swing band dance craze is surely the physical, playful side of the tradition.

CD Reviews Online
OK, don't take my word for it - check out these other sources of CD reviews on the internet. You can find out about a lot of new releases this way, even if you don't agree with the reviewers.

Celtic Music
Celtic and Celtic-inspired music from around the world: artist pages, song databases and on-line resources.

Children's Music
A perennially popular folk genre, children's music ranges from the nauseatingly treackly to the hysterically irreverent. I agree with Mark Twain that most children's lit/art condescends by teaching and moralizing in the guise of fun, but they're all here.

Concert Listings & Calendars
Great music is everywhere, and the folk scene has evolved some seriously good web sources to help you find it.

Festivals: International & U.S.
Great festivals abound for folk and acoustic music across the United States as well as Canada, Europe, and just about everywhere else. Some are specialized, but most cover a wide range of styles and are family-friendly.

Filk Music
Songs of Fantasy, Science-Fiction, Politics, Religion and other weirdness - from the spacy to the satirical.

Folk Dancing
There is a thriving community built around the social life of folk dancing: contra dance, square dance and - recently - country swing. Here are some resources to get you started.

Folk Pop
Folk music traditionally grapples with work, sex and death. But many performers on today's folk circuit offer more upbeat, family-oriented material. These entertainers are fine musicians and the best give inspired, often inspiring performances.

House Concerts
Recently in the news, house concerts are making a comeback as a major venue for seeing live acoustic music. Netlinks to individual series, listings, and resources for musicians and prospective hosts.

Instruments & Equipment
Where and how to buy, sell and repair instruments and professional audio equipment on the net. For amateurs and pros alike. You can also find information about voice and guitar lessons.

International: British Isles
A listing of artists, venues and organizations in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales

International: Canada
Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot, Buffy St. Marie - the music and musicians of Canada have made a huge impact on the folk tradition. This page offers resources to explore Canada's offerings.

International: Down Under
A listing of artists, venues and organizations in Australia and New Zealand.

International: Non-English
Resources, organizations and artists from beyond the Anglo-American tradition: Germany, Netherlands, Czech., France, Cape Verde Islands....

Labor & Politics
Links to on-line music resources pertaining mostly to labor issues but other areas of political activism as well. Home pages of artists for whom labor and social issues are a key focus.

Lilith, etc.: Women & Music
Women artists who, in their work and in their lives, deal with the politics of sex and gender, and/or artists who have made a particular appeal to female audiences. A tricky category, but a useful one. Includes artists and online resources.

MP3: Sites and Software
The newest software technology - much of it free - allows you to upload and download near-CD quality music on the internet. Folk music is generally lagging here (duh), but catching up fast.

Music in Education
Sites offering resources for educators in all disciplines seeking to use music- and musicians - in their curricula.

Native American Music
Traditional tribal and contemporary music by the indigenous peoples of North America. Resources include record labels, festivals/pow-wows, home pages, and cultural organizations.

News Groups/Mailing Lists/Webrings: The Online Community
How the folk community stays small: F_M (Folk Music: general discussions), FolkDJ-L (DJ's post playlists and discuss issues), FolkBiz-L (artists, venues, managers and agents hash out music business), and Venue-L.

Organizations
From ASCAP, BMI and the National Folk Alliance to smaller groups focusing on genres like children's music, political songs, or bluegrass and regional groups that run workshops, dances and host occasional concerts.

Musicians' Resources
Sites for the casual or professional autoharp, banjo, fiddle, guitar and mandolin players include instructional materials, instrument making, contests, buying & selling, organizations, and more.

Poets, Rappers & Raconteurs
Storytelling has always been an integral part of folklore and is a mainstay at many festivals. And I'm with those who think that rap may be the most authentic genre of folk music today. So, here's my plug.

Publications
An international array of magazines and e-zines for pros and fans. Find out who and what's in the news.

Radio Online and Webcasting
Check out some of the world's best folk DJs, or enjoy your favorite local shows from the road. Most have links to RealAudio where you can download the free software you need to listen.

Record Labels
Each record label has its own sound and philosophy. Looking for other artists on the same label as someone you like is a good way to find new music. It's also makes economic sense to buy direct.

Treats!
A few diversions I've collected: enthusiastic concert reviews from Oklahoma, Dar William's Tofu Tollbooth, an authentic Dublin pub crawl complete with photos, and live video feed from a London club.

Venue Listings
Several sources have compiled lists of venues around the U.S., Canada and overseas - and of course there's Musi-Cal. They vary in completeness and ease of use. Fun browsing for fans or pros.

Venues
A growing number of venues now have their own websites, offering detailed calendars, links to artists playing upcoming shows, and directions. One even offers live video webcasts, and more are bound to follow.
